Questions to Ask Yourself On Making Tough Life Decisions

I think we can all agree that life can be a real b*tch at times, as it puts us in situations that require us to make difficult decisions – decisions that, no matter what, would entail heartache, headache, or both. Some of them require a true sacrifice, while others involve big risks.

To help you deal with such trying moments in your life, here are four questions you could and should ask yourself before making the final decision. I hope at the end of the list, you will find the answer that is already in your heart and make the right and best choice. So here we go:

1. “What does my heart say?”

Listen to your heart. Breathe in, breathe out, and listen. If it doesn’t work, try a few more times. Close your eyes, breathe in, breathe out, and listen… Don’t focus on the big mess of thoughts in your head right now. Focus on what your gut feeling tells you. Find that answer and hold on to it.

Always trust your instinct. I’m not saying that your parents’ or your friends’ advice and suggestions are bad for you – and we should always be appreciative of the love and concern from our loved ones, no matter how much they may bug us – but at the end of the day, it is you who knows yourself best.

You are the one who truly understand what you want and what you do not want. Deep down, you know what’s best for yourself.

This is your life. You must be its dictator. Don’t let someone else do your thinking and soul searching for you. The responsibility to seek the truth inside your heart lies in your hands. Don’t let other people’s guesses about your life, or your future, sway or mislead you. Use your own intuition.

It is not always easy to listen to your heart, and it works differently for different people. For some, the best way to do so is to go out for a quiet walk alone; the peace helps them sieve out the more significant things in their minds. For others, running or hitting the gym, and experiencing the pain and the weakening of the physical body, helps to clear up their heads. (This is why many athletes are such clear-headed, focused and determined people.) In any way, always listen to your heart.


2. “What am I afraid of?”

Difficult decisions come with high stakes. When there is much to gain, there is much to lose. Ask yourself: What am I afraid of losing? Is it money? Love? Reputation? Dignity? Popularity?

Or is it because you’re afraid of disappointment, to lose hope in yourself if you fail? Sometimes we are afraid of making big decisions that involve huge changes in our lives because we fear that if we do fail, we might not be able to pick ourselves up again.

To counter this fear, you need to accept that we all fall from grace from time to time. Know that no one is invincible, or immune to a little misstep here and there, and occasionally, a huge one. We are all humans, not gods. Well, even angels and gods can fall from power.

And yet, as ordinary people, each of us possesses a special gift: the resilience of the human spirit – the ability to bounce back each time we fall. Fall down seven times; stand up eight. When life knocks you down, stand back up and keep trying.

Sometimes, we don’t wish to be the one making the decision also because we are afraid that if we were to be wrong, the responsibility of it all falls solely on us. There is no one else to blame, no one else to point the finger at. However, you should also realize that everyone makes mistake.

No one is perfect, or 100% right all the time. Yes, there would be a price to pay if you fail, but then again, you would also gain something in return: a lesson. Allow yourself to make mistakes. Think of it as meant to be. Be determined to get something out of the decision and the experience that follows, whether you succeed or fail, rise or fall.

A Japanese proverb reads: “Anzuru yori umu ga yasushi.” Its literal meaning is that giving birth to a baby is easier than worrying about it. What it serves to explain is that the fear you experience is probably greater than the danger itself. Your attempt is likely to be easier than expected. So if you are afraid, then do it afraid. Trust me, courage will follow.


3. “Who/what am I doing this for?”

You have to figure this out right from the start. This is what will anchor you during the fight and the struggle following the moment the decision is made. This is what you will go back to, again and again, whenever you feel discouraged, disappointed or hopeless.

Is it just for passion? Is it also for money, or success? Is there something else? Often, our bigger goals are combined with other small or hidden goals, which we fail to perceive or choose to ignore. Never let yourself be denied of the truth that is already inside you.

One day the suppressed truth will pop up when you least expect it and tell you that everything you’ve worked for is done on the basis of a lie you tell yourself. So be honest with yourself. Know who you are and what you want. Take this as a learning process to get to know yourself better as a person.

When you know what you want, make it your goal. Focus your mind on it, and be happy about it. Remember: Positive emotions will put positive energies towards your goal. This positivity will make your journey towards achieving this goal smoother, as it will attract other good things along the way.

The law of attraction can work in many mysterious ways. Make a conscious effort to stop worrying. Think about the good things, not the worst-case scenarios.

You don’t always need to take great leaps of faith. Sometimes, it’s the baby steps that matter. Take one step at a time; take each day as it comes. There is no shortcut to success. If you want it, you’re going to have to work for it. But always keep in mind: Enjoy life, not endure it.


4. “If I don’t do this now, will I regret in the future?”

Yes, regrets. We all hate regrets because regret makes us feel empty, like something is amiss in our life. Regret makes us feel like we have done something that we shouldn’t have, or we haven’t done something that we should have. Regret makes you wish that you could turn back time, so there’s a second chance for you to make things right.

Regret can be addictive, because it puts us in a cycle in which we imagine the could-haves, and then become disappointed upon realizing the impossibility of them becoming real. To relieve ourselves of the pain, we go back to imagining again because then, in our minds, we feel powerful and in control once more.

For every decision you make, there is an opportunity cost. Simply put, in life, you win some; you lose some. You can’t have everything. This especially applies to time. You do not have all the time in the world. Life is short. I say this because life is unpredictable; one day you are here and the next you could be gone.

Well, the truth is, we don’t have full control over everything, even if we’d like to think that we do. Lost chances can keep us up all night because they prove that things can come and go without our approval, or without us being at all prepared for their departure. An opportunity does not need your permission before slipping right through your fingers.

When you choose to stay in your comfort zone instead of stepping out of it, you might miss out on an opportunity that will not come by a second time in your life. In the worst of scenarios, regret leads us to hate ourselves. Our lack of courage and prudence makes us feel so small and so incapable of achieving something bigger than our present self.

Regret is a powerful emotion that can topple even the most spirited person. Do not let regret into your life. Let the could-haves be. What is in the past is exactly that, in the past. It cannot be changed.

At the end of the day, we all want to be winners in life. We want to know that we have made the right decisions. Success is a matter of perception, just as happiness is. They are both very subjective. Keep in mind that no decision is purely good, or bad. No matter what decision you make in the end, believe that it is your best choice. Choose to be positive and confident about it.

In ending, I’ll leave you with a quote from Paulo Coelho:

“When we least expect it, life sets us a challenge to test our courage and willingness to change; at such a moment, there is no point in pretending that nothing has happened or in saying that we are not yet ready. The challenge will not wait. Life does not look back. A week is more than enough time for us to decide whether or not to accept our destiny.”

 Listen to your heart. Be bold. Set a goal. Take a chance.

MY SUMMER

My Summer is nearing its end. She’s gonna shine somewhere else. I’m gonna miss her smile. And the warmth that comforts me.

Its been a quarter, and I did not need to go to any beach or vacation to make this summer the best I had so far. You changed me, you taught me lessons, you made me realize things.

IT’S COMPLICATED

It seems like complication is the motto of this generation. It used to be just math problems but it seems math is simpler than relationships or the lack of it and those in between.

My unending question is, why does it seem sometimes that everything feels okay one day and then it’s the other way around the next. Everyone wants to be able to give a clear answer when asked.

Have you seen people using the phrase “it’s complicated” to describe their relationship status on social media profiles? Is there any chance that you’ve used that description yourself?

Relationships don’t seem to be the only thing getting more complicated these days. Why do you think that is? If you could pick out one major reason why life seems more complicated than it used to, what would you say?

Complicated is, as complicated thinks. While there are no doubt many contributors, here’s a reason you probably didn’t think of. As it turns out, dealing with complex issues actually conditions us to look for complicated solutions. This means that we often overlook simple solutions, even when they are right in front of our face. Could it be that our own thinking is actually making things more complex than necessary?

Now rest assured, I’m not saying that everything is always simple. Truth is, some things are more complex and require complex solutions. The point I really want to make is that we should look for a simple solution first. That means avoiding the tendency to assume that our challenges are more difficult than they really are.

Let’s go back to “relationship status” for a moment. Could it be that a large dose of honest communication would uncomplicated things considerably? Avoiding honest communication can complicate the daylights out of a relationship. Maybe we have been assuming things about the other person that simply aren’t accurate. Why not ask them to tell you how they feel instead of jumping to conclusions.

All long term, meaningful relationships will face challenges from time to time. Don’t get hypnotized by the seeming complexity of the situation. Try to keep it simple, open, and honest, and see if things don’t end up feeling much less complicated. I think you will be glad you did.

Do ourselves a favor, let’s stop complicating our life. Let’s uncomplicated situations.

 


Friday Sickness

Occurrence: every Friday

Symptoms: bored to death, drowsiness, brain-dead, always looking on the wall clock, low morale

Findings: There’s an epidemic gripping the country. Each Friday, the population of most classes, and offices, would be drastically halved. People would disappear mysteriously, only to reappear in the most random of places like their homes, malls, or beer joints scattered across the country.

Bosses and teachers are baffled at the sudden drop in attendance. “Wala naman sakit si *****, ano sya, may Friday Sickness?”. And so we have the name of the disease: the Friday sickness.
Usually referring to absences that fall on a Friday, the Friday sickness seizes people with only one or two matters to attend, those who fear their superiors, and people who are beckoned by the sheer fun of pagtambay. In short, the lazy people.
I am one of them.
As I write this, it’s (surprise, surprise) Friday and once more the stealthy claws of Friday sickness are taking me by the wrists. A soft voice entices to me to make a permanent detour to Intrepid Court, where they have a nice 5+1 (if you share my vices, you’ll know what this is) promo over at Eastwood City. Besides, I have no deadline to meet.
One. Measly. Work. Sorry, ma’am, but I’d rather appreciate the beauty of the math equation 5+1=6.
See how easy it is to succumb to the sickness?
There’s that magical quality about Friday. It’s the gateway to two beautiful days of rest (for normal students and some employees, that is, not those with hellish schedules and night duties). You can practically smell the freedom that Friday brings with it. The seconds left until dismissal are golden, teasing you until you just can’t stand the waiting.
Unless, of course, you give in to the temptation and cut class or file an undertime altogether. As my ex-seminarian friend once said, “Lord, lead me not into temptation, but then again, Thy will be done.”
At school, for the teachers, it’s a continuous struggle to keep the students coming when the week is about to end. There would always be lessons that wait for no student, infected with Friday sickness or not.
Attendance though, is not the only concern.  “A person’s habitual absence is a question of respect. If the person respects the superior, he/she will attend to his responsibility.”
Apparently, the Friday sickness is something that is known to both students/employee and teachers/bosses. The first are not the only ones afflicted with the Friday sickness. The itch may strike even some of the latter themselves. I’ve known a professor who skips his last class to celebrate the weekend. As ridiculous as it seem, even senators have Friday sickness!
If this is the case, then I’m alarmed. I’m alarmed about my apparent lack of discipline as well as that of others. If the Friday sickness becomes a habit, then we, might carry this for a lifetime. What would happen then? If the Friday sickness is an actual disease, we would have had cancer by now.
Disclaimer! – I managed to gather myself up, and drag my feet to come to office in spite of the bad “bed weather” today. AAGHH! I miss my bed.

Top 10 Dirtiest Things You Touch Everyday

I recently saw an article discussing a previous study about the dirtiest objects – these are the 10 most common everyday things filled with dirt and germs that people touch in their daily routine. This list will give you every reason to sterilize everything that comes your way. Sanitizer, anybody?

1. Money – Everybody loves money, but nobody loves the germs that comes along with it! Yuck. From the SM cashier to the business executive’s office to the homeless man on the street, there’s an enormous amount of bacteria on every buckaroo in your pocket. Dr. Darlington, the Health Commissioner of New York, found 135,000 bacteria from washing one bill and 126,000 from another. The way to tackle this problem is easy: wash your hands.

2. Light Switch – Somebody’s got to do it, and usually it’s the last person in the room. So pack up your things quick and get out of there because turning off the light switch in a public area is just about the nastiest task anyone can be assigned to do, besides counting rolls of money (refer to #1). All the itty bitty germs love swirling around on the plastic switch that’s touched by millions of dirty fingers over the years add up to about 217 bacteria/square inch. According to a local restroom sanitation glossary, that’s what you’d call a common contact point where germs are transmitted. Clorox wipe, anyone?

3. Keyboard – The computer’s your friend (except when it freezes on you in the most pivotal moments of life) but its accompanying keyboard is a nemesis thriving with germs. In a study from a British consumer group in 2009, 33 computer keyboards were randomly sampled and out of these tested four were considered a health hazard. One was even discovered to have more bacteria than your average toilet. The only way to clean (or delete) this pile of cooties is to spray the keyboard with a can of compressed air and wipe with a cloth dipped in mild detergent.

4. Cell Phone – Forget the dog. Cell phones are a modern (wo)man’s best friend. Heck, the average person probably touches, taps, or strokes their or her cell phone more times than they pet their neglected pooch at home. New research from the United Kingdom show that mobile phones are a technological petri dish for tens and thousands of germs, mainly due to the heat that they generate as well as the bacteria it shares with your hands and face. Next time, consider an anti-microbial coating for your phone or frequent anti-bacterial wipe-downs. Or sterile rubber gloves every time you touch or use your phone, always disposing of them in a furnace immediately afterward.

5. Toilet Seat – Though the toilet seat has been good to you on many a bad days, its porcelain white surface is party-host to all sorts of diseases and viruses. Statistics show that there are 295 bacteria for every square inch of the cold, smooth surface. Though that’s not as bad as the 3.2 million on the toilet bowl, it’s still not a place to rest your head on at night – or in the morning.

6. Shopping Cart – Sorry to be a killjoy, but surfing down the grocery aisle just got a lot less fun. Think of every possible bacteria-filled thing a person can touch – well, once they hit their local supermarket, those things can also be found on the handle of any shopping cart. In fact, there may even be things on there that you haven’t touched. A study from the University of Arizona found that shopping carts were loaded with more bacteria, saliva, and fecal matter than escalators, public telephones, and even public bathrooms. So next time you’re at a supermarket, you might as well pick yourself up some Purell. Shop and squirt, shop and squirt…

7. Remote Control – How many times has ice cream splattered onto your remote control and you’ve just ignored it? Or even worse, smeared it across the surface into an expansive-but-barely-there layer? Add to that the MRSA, VRE and SARS bacteria that is easily transferable by touching TV remotes, and you’ve got yourself one soiled artifact. Next channel, please.

8. Bath Tub – Sure, you’re all clean and spiffy, but what about your bathtub? The bathtub is home to many toxic bacteria that is often left unnoticed. That is, until someone in the family catches a staph infection, urinary tract infection, pneumonia, septicemia, or some form of a skin condition. Believe it or not, bacteria left lingering near the drain of a bathtub is worse than bacteria found in the toilet. By cleaning the bathtub with bathroom cleaner just once a week, you can minimize these unwanted germs (and illnesses) from you and your loved ones. Go on, give it a good rub-a-dub-dub.

9. Kitchen Sink – Contrary to popular opinion, the kitchen may actually be the dirtiest place in the house. Of course, that’s not including your dirty little brother Jimmy’s bedroom but that’s another story. Anyway, there’s typically 500,000 bacteria per square inch in the kitchen sink drain alone, so you can only imagine the total gunk with faucet handles and all. To solve the problem from the inside out, try pouring 1/2 cup baking soda and 1/2 cup of vinegar down the drain. Finally, rinse with hot water, and you just might hear your sink burp a clean gurgle of delight.

10. Kitchen Sponge –
Now it just seems like I’m messing with your head. But I’m not. It’s true. The very sponge that takes the grit off of your dishes and bathroom sink, is really the dirtiest of them all. The yellow and green icon of the kitchen is really a cozy home for germs. Its moist, micro-crevices make it harder to disinfect, so instead of wiping surfaces clean with a sponge, users are really just transferring bacteria from one place to another. An easy remedy is to microwave the sponge for 60 seconds–it improves the odor too!

“F” in Stress

Lately, I had a newfound interest in reading and writing, (perhaps on anything), a while ago I just finished reading an article all about stress and thought that some information could be of any use to others specially those like me, who had made an unwritten pact between stress itself.

Stress, is perhaps one of the most widespread and popular word in the town. In a fast paced busy world we have, avoiding being in such state is nearly impossible. But in fairness to one of the most unwanted mental/emotional strain known to man, the term stress is often used or regarded as in a wrong way. Stress is often related to any strain, worry, tension or difficulty we have, but then, at some point that may not really be the case. We may be suffering from a different suspect: depression, disappointment etc. which is far from being “stress”.

Fight – one of the three “F” options for managing stress (the other being flee and flow) is the most destructive. You win by punches, but you inflict psychological wounds on someone. Flee takes you nowhere. Flow is the best.

Whatever you resist, persists, or as they say – “pag pinigil, lalong manggigigil”. Why is that you can choose your friends but not your family? You can have your “dream guy or girl” but then you can’t force him or her to like you as well. Same banana.

Relationships – that’s the heart of EQ. The test is when you’re in conflict, and it will always happen. And when it comes, it won’t hurt to swallow your pride once in a while. It’s not fattening anyway. Self-confidence is good but healthy self-esteem is better. Second, consider anyone innocent until proven guilty, withhold any judgments on someone until things are absolutely clear. Never assume nor guess.

These two actions: humility and open-mindedness-cure the two causes of conflict, pride and prejudice. They make you “flow” and it makes life a little less complicated.

Pain is an event, suffering is a choice. You can’t change people but you can change yourself. Your constructive energy influences others, and can miraculously change them on their own.

And life is a relationship. Let’s not push. Don’t hit with fatal mistakes. Dance with the music. Don’t fight, don’t flee, just flow.

 

That’s the manliest thing you can do.


One for the Stressed

Getting criticized your supervisor; finding out that someone you love has lied to you; receiving some bad news — these things cause stress. And stress has negative consequences, as you well know. But these are only stressful events. The source of stress that wreaks the greatest havoc on your health and sanity is ongoing stressful circumstances.

But there is something you can do about it. When you have an ongoing stressful circumstance in your life, you can modify your level of responsibility. Either take more responsibility or less. Start by asking yourself, “Am I trying to control something I can’t or shouldn’t control?” or “Is there something I should take responsibility for that I have been leaving out of my control?”

It might help to write it out. Write the questions and then jot down some ideas — where are you taking too much or too little control of some aspect of your life?

If something is out of your control (or is none of your business and you’ve been trying to make it your business), you will relieve yourself of a lot of stress by letting go of it. Drop that one. Recognize it’s out of your control and busy yourself with things that are in your control. You may be in the habit of trying to control that thing, so you’ll have to remind yourself again and again for a couple of weeks: “Oh yeah, I’m not trying to control that anymore.” Write it on a card and carry it with you. Post notes to yourself on your bathroom mirror. Do whatever you have to do to remember you no longer have to waste your energy trying to control that thing.

Now, if you find something you should and can control and haven’t been, roll up your sleeves and get to work on solving the problem.Deliberately take steps to repair the troubling circumstances. That’ll relieve your stress better than anything else. It may be difficult at first; it may actually cause you extra stress to face the situation and try to deal with it, but in the long-term, your stress level will go down.

Take responsibility for what you are responsible for, and stop taking responsibility for what is not your responsibility. It’s that simple. Control what you can control, and let the rest go. It will relieve a great deal of your stress. Control stress by stressing control.

Control what is your responsibility.
